Discover the Beauty of the Ancient World in Iraq

Explore Mesopotamia on a private 7-day tour with expert local guidance

Day 1 – Babylon & Karbala | Where Civilization Began

Your journey begins in Baghdad, where you are welcomed and assisted upon arrival before setting out toward the legendary lands of ancient Mesopotamia.

The first stop is Babylon, once one of the greatest cities the world has ever known. Walking through its ruins, you step into the heart of early human civilization—where law, religion, and urban life first took shape under kings like Hammurabi.

Nearby, you visit Borsippa, home to the ziggurat dedicated to Nabu, god of wisdom and writing, a reminder of Babylon’s deep connection to knowledge and learning.

The day continues with a visit to the Shrine of Prophet Job (Ayub), a sacred place revered across Islam, Christianity, and Judaism, symbolizing patience and faith.

By evening, you arrive in Karbala, one of the holiest cities in the Islamic world, where the shrines of Imam Husayn and Al-Abbas stand as timeless symbols of sacrifice, justice, and courage. Overnight in Karbala.

Day 2 – Najaf & Kufa | The Birth of Early Islam

Leaving Karbala, you travel south to Najaf, a city that has drawn scholars and pilgrims for centuries. Here lies the shrine of Imam Ali, a central figure in Islamic history, and a place of deep spiritual significance.

You then continue to Kufa, once the capital of the early Islamic state. Visiting its Great Mosque and historic sites, you explore a city closely linked to the formative years of Islamic governance and thought.

The day concludes at Wadi Al-Salam, the largest cemetery in the world, where generations of believers have chosen to be laid to rest. Overnight in Najaf.

Day 3 – Southern Iraq | The Origins of Writing and Nature

Today takes you deep into southern Iraq, where civilization itself was born.

You begin at Uruk, one of the world’s earliest cities and the birthplace of writing, where humanity first recorded its thoughts in clay.

From there, you visit the Ziggurat of Ur, a monumental Sumerian temple rising from the desert, standing for over 4,000 years as a testament to early religious life.

The journey continues into the Mesopotamian Marshes, a timeless landscape shaped by the Tigris and Euphrates rivers, preserving one of the oldest continuous ways of life on Earth. Overnight in Basra.

Day 4 – Basra Heritage | Trade, Culture, and Diversity

The morning begins with a walk through Basra Old City, once a vital hub of trade connecting Mesopotamia to the Gulf and the wider world. Its streets tell stories of merchants, scholars, and poets.

You visit the Armenian Churches of Basra, reflecting the city’s long tradition of religious coexistence and diversity.

At the Basra Museum, housed in a former presidential palace, you explore artifacts spanning Mesopotamian, Islamic, and modern Iraqi history.

In the afternoon, you travel north, returning to Baghdad for an overnight stay.

Day 5 – Samarra & Mosul | Empires of the North

Departing Baghdad, you head toward Samarra, once the capital of the Abbasid Empire. Here you see the iconic Malwiya Minaret, a unique spiral structure unlike anything else in the Islamic world.

You also visit the Al-Askari Shrine, the resting place of two revered Shia Imams.

Continuing north, you arrive in Mosul, a historic city that has long been a crossroads of cultures and civilizations. Overnight in Mosul.

Day 6 – Mosul, Nimrud & Hatra | Lost Cities of Empires

Today is dedicated to the ancient empires of northern Iraq.

You explore Old Mosul, learning about its layered history and remarkable resilience.

Outside the city, you visit Nimrud, one of the great Assyrian capitals, once adorned with colossal statues and palace reliefs.

The journey continues to Hatra, a powerful desert city that resisted Roman conquest and stands today as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Return to Baghdad for overnight.

Day 7 – Baghdad | The Abbasid Capital

Your final day focuses on Baghdad, once the heart of the Islamic Golden Age.

You visit Al-Kadhimiya, home to the shrines of Imam Musa al-Kadhim and Imam Muhammad al-Jawad, a major center of pilgrimage.

A walk through Old Baghdad reveals echoes of the Abbasid era, when the city was a global center of science, philosophy, and culture.

The journey concludes at the Aqarquf Ziggurat, a Kassite-era tower standing as a reminder of Baghdad’s ancient roots.

    The Abbasid Palace in Baghdad

Rare surviving example of medieval Islamic architecture from the Abbasid period (8th–13th centuries). Built around the 12th century, it is known for its elegant brickwork, pointed arches, and geometric designs. The palace likely served as an administrative or educational center rather than a royal residence. Today, it stands as a symbol of Baghdad’s rich cultural and architectural heritage.
